Ionosphere – a part of the atmosphere composed of electrically charged particles ionized by solar radiation. The name of this part of the atmosphere was officially accepted in 1950 by a committee at the Institute of Radio Engineers, and its definition reads: “The ionosphere is a part of the high Earth’s atmosphere where ions and electrons exist in quantities sufficient to affect the propagation of radio waves.” The predominant part of ions in the ionosphere arises through protonization (proton + field).
